Pura vida! You hear and see this one everywhere in Costa Rica. Literally translated it means: 'pure life'. The answer to the question: ¨How are you?¨ the Costarrican answers: 'Pura vida'. How was dinner? 'Pura vida'. A tourist who travels through the country and sometimes speaks these magical words, always receives a warm smile.
Travelling amongst the Tico's (that´s how Costarricans call themselves) is 'pura vida'. On the streets you are not constantly bothered by people who want to sell you something. Costarricans leave you in peace.
In the country side your greet is always answered. School children wave to you whenever you pass by. Are you reading a map on a street corner, there will always be someone who offers help. Costarricans are very friendly and cheerful, and give travellers the feeling they are welcome.
Contact with locals during a trip is unforgettable. It is a pity that not all Costarricans speak English. This goes also for the people that work in tourism. The main language in the country is Spanish. If you do not speak Spanish, it is a good idea to memorize or write down some simple daily phrases. Beacuase that is the key to contact with the ticos. Costarricans like an educated treat.
They appreciate it if tourists behave well educated. Simple things like a nice ´hello´ when you come in of a ´thank you´ for the service, are tremendously appreciated here and can form the beginning of a hilaric conversation in Spanglish or be the reason why you receive an even better serivce.
It can really make your holiday 'Pura Vida!
